Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum Review, Side Effects & How to Spot Original Vs. Fake

The Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum is one of the popular serums in Nigeria. This is so because of its affordable price and the words on the street regarding how well it brightens the skin, fades out dark spots, and even works as an acne removal. Some even claimed it helps remove wrinkles on their face.

Pei Mei Vitamin C serum reviews

But what do I think? For me, I research every serum mentioned on this blog, read reviews, and expert opinions to draw a conclusion. In this Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum review, I will be discussing all you need to know about the serum. These include the packaging and impression, effectiveness, pros and cons, side effects, and benefits, as well as the price and best alternatives, among others.

Brief Summary of Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum Review

Below is a summary of my review of Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum.

This is a low-budget vitamin C serum. It is good for both the face and body. Research shows it whitens, brightens, and glows the skin. This serum can also face dark spots and post-acne discoloration. The manufacturer claims it works against wrinkles but only a few users have experienced that.

It takes an average of 4 weeks (30 days) for the serum to work with visible results. Though it is suitable for all skin types, I recommend you try out a patch test if you have sensitive skin.

Packaging & First Impression

When I got the Pei Mei vitamin C serum, I almost mistook it for the Roushun Vitamin C serum. This is because they come in the same cartoon with just the name written on them differently. This then leads me to question whether Pei Mei serum is a spin-off or low-budget Roushun serum. But that’s an answer for another day.

The serum itself is contained in a transparent dropper bottle. It is a viscous liquid that looks like an oil. But not too thick. You could mistake it for an eyedrop if removed from it container. There’s a pamphlet in the small cartoon. The dropper bottle looks fragile and like something that will break if dropped hard. I didn’t try it… lol!

Ingredients: What Does it Contain?

I always have a tradition when I purchase skincare — I don’t look at the front, I look at the back. This is because that’s where the real and important information is. I look at the ingredient list to see what is contained. Does it contain ingredients that you should avoid? Does the ingredient list conform with the promise on the marketing-focused front page?

First, the ingredient list was standard, as the individual ingredients were listed from highest to lowest concentration. My major problem here is, water is written as water instead of “aqua”, which is the INCI nomenclature for water. Other than this, every other thing is OK.

  • Active Ingredients in it

There are a good number of active ingredients in the Pei Mei Vitamin C serum that makes it quite potent and effective. The number one active ingredient here is Ascorbic Acid )Vitamin C. This is meant for skin brightening, lightening, and whitening.

Vitamin C together with Astaxanthin, and a few others have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that keep the skin healthy. They help improve the look of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. Arbutin is another active ingredient that has been found to fade dark spots. It also hinders the skin pigmentation process.

  • Ingredients to be Wary of

This serum contains an ingredient with the name fragrance. This is a generic name for perfume and quite allowed for cosmetics. But the drill here is, you can never know the specific ingredients that make up this. In most fragrances, there are usually between 20 to 50 ingredients— and they are allowed not to mention it.

It might interest you to know fragrance/perfume is the number one cause of contact allergy in skincare products. If you have sensitive skin, you should avoid this serum or do a patch test first. Diazolidinyl Urea is another ingredient you have to be aware of as it can be a skin irritant too.

  • Full Ingredient List

Below is the list of ingredients found in this product. You can use the INCIDecoder tool to check the benefit of each of them.

Water, Glycerin, Astaxanthin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin E, Arbutin, Propylene Glycol, Betaine, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin, Disodium EDTA, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Fragrance and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil.

Benefits and Use Cases

Below are the benefits you’ll get from using this serum.

  1. It brightens and lightens the skin.
  2. Fades dark and brown spots.
  3. Acts as a moisturizer because of the glycerin in it.
  4. It helps improve the look of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots
  5. Keeps your skin healthy and fresh.

Side Effects and Cons

You are told this serum does not have a side effect, but that’s not true. Most users of the product will not experience any side effects using this product. However, if you have sensitive skin, I will recommend you either avoid this product or test it using the patch test. This is because it contains ingredients that are known allergens and skin irritants.

These include fragrance, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, and Diazolidinyl Urea. These can make Pei Mei Vitamin C serum itch you, or even cause you blisters and rashes. However, remember, most users will not experience any of these side effects.

Before and After Use — Result Expectations

The Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum is low budget so my expectations weren’t high. However, after thorough research, I discovered it is not as bad as I thought — you just need to manage your expectations. First, don’t expect this to magically get your face glowing and fix all imperfections in a day or two. In fact, it takes an average of 4 weeks for this serum to work with visible results.

I have seen pictures of the before and after use of this serum from verified users. And I can tell you for a fact; It will make your skin brighter and remove dark spots. It is effective for fighting acne in some people. The wrinkle improvement part is the aspect that takes a longer period to show. The best thing for you is to make use of this serum consistently for maximum results.

Original Vs. Fake: How to Spot Original Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum

The market has been adulterated by a good number of fake skincare products and Pei Mei vitamin C serum is not an exception. Unlike the Dr. Rashel Vitamin C Serum which provides a verifiable method to check whether the product you have in your possession is authentic or not, this does not have such.

My only advice for you is to purchase from reputable sellers. I would recommend you avoid buying from roadside cosmetics shops except you trust them. Later in the article, I will recommend where you can buy this product and you can be sure it is the original product.

How to Use Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum

If you must benefit from the potency of this serum, you must use and apply it the right way. First, I recommend you use it consistently — only then will it work for you. The Pei Mei Vitamin C serum is best applied when the skin is damp. Usually after taking your bath or cleaning before moisturizing or creaming. This improved absorption into your skin for its benefits.

Use the dropper to fetch the serum and then pour it on your skin directly or on your hands before applying it. Rub it in a circular method until you’ve covered the part of the skin you want to rub it. When you’re done, you can then apply cream or a moisturizer to lock it in. Even though it could moisturize your skin, just know that this oil is not a moisturizer.

Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum Price in Nigeria

The Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum is sold for between N1500 to N3500, depending on the merchant. In cosmetics shops, you’ll get this for N2700 or within that range in most cases. This serum is quite cheaper on e-commerce platforms on the Internet as you can get it for as cheap as N1500 on Jumia.

It is important you know that this serum is the cheapest serum I can recommend. There are cheaper options in the market that people use. However, I won’t recommend them. This is because many do not follow the standards and I wouldn’t recommend products that don’t follow standards.

Review Verdict: How Good is Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum?

This skincare product is good as an entry-level, low-budget serum for skin brightening, fading of dark spots, and acne removal. It is also good at improving the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. You just need to manage your expectations and know that it could take about 4 weeks to start seeing a reasonable visible change in your skin.

Because of the presence of fragrance and other potential allergens, I recommend those with sensitive skin to avoid this or do a patch test before making use of this. This is my stand in this Pei Mei Vitamin C serum review.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum a Bleaching Serum?

No, it is not a bleaching serum. Though it contains vitamin C which is an ingredient that helps brighten and lighten your skin, it does not contain it in a concentration enough to bleach your skin. However, it will brighten your complexion and makes you lighter.

Does Pei Mei Vitamin C Contain Hydroquinone?

No, Pei Mei serum does not contain hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is an active ingredient in skin care products that bleaches the skin. What this serum contains is vitamin C and what it does is to brighten the skin — it does not bleach it. And as such, the harmful effect of hydroquinone is not what you should expect to experience and it is not present here.

Where to Buy Pei Mei Vitamin C Serum in Nigeria

This skincare product can be purchased from many of cosmetics stores within the country. I recommend you purchase from Jumia as I do know the one sold there is authentic. You can order it and get it within a few days depending on your location.
